David Slade’s New Project And ‘Eclipse’ Tweets

Via Twilight Examiner

While it seemed that David Slade (director of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) had bid his final farewell to the Saga via Twitter this weekend, he took to the social networking platform last night to talk about Eclipse and, among other things, to update fans about his next project (and to dispel rumors about his involvement with other films).

Here’s what he had to say about Twilight:

How do you know Twi isn’t my cup of tea? I actually got completely lost in the historical backstories of Eclipse…

…and suggested directing an R Rated film based on “The Short 2nd Life Of Bree Tanner” to Stephenie Meyer.

Other behind scenes stories: Early alt title for Eclipse: “Twilight 3, Twi-Hard or Die Twi-ing” was rejected by the studio more than once.

Obviously, at least some of that was a joke.

David Slade Talks ‘Eclipse’ and the Next Big Thing

Via Next Movie

“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” director David Slade has experienced the fervor firsthand, telling NextMovie exclusively: “At this point, I think I’m finally getting less recognizable and that suits me just fine.  The days of being stopped on the street are actually getting less and less.”

Fortunately, Slade explains, his popularity came late in the game, keeping him free to serve the story first and the fans second. “When we started this, the fan culture … had nowhere near the groundswell that it has now.  I think that was good for me because I went in with a very clear picture of the film I wanted to make — that was very subservient to cinema, not to the novel, not to fan favorite things.”

Read on for the rest of our interview with Slade, in which he reveals the way “Eclipse” almost ended,  predicts the next “Twilight” — and explains the magic behind Meyer’s creation.

Did fan pressure ever divert your grand plan for “Eclipse?”
It was subservient to cinema and to make the best movie.  I decided to continue with that and to not reference so much what had happened before and just work on the moment and work on moving forward. To some degree, it’s my chagrin if certain fan favorite scenes weren’t included in the film, but largely they were — and largely that’s because they’re usually the best scenes and therefore they end up being your favorite scenes as well as director.

On the DVD, there are certain deleted scenes and while I’m not a fan … this is a film which has a fan subculture. I felt there was a kind of responsibility to explain myself where certain scenes were shot that didn’t make it into the film.

I have a lot of time for the subcultures that bring kids together, regardless of subject matter. Often it’s just a good solid source for people to bond,” he said.

He also discussed some of his personal goals in making the film, saying “I wanted Rob [Pattinson] to be scary. I wanted him to have a visceral quality, where a flash of his eyes kind of made it look like he could kill.”

Twilight’s David Slade Lead Contender to Direct ‘Wolverine’ 2

Even if you’re not a Twi-hard, you probably heard that the latest installment, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, was a step up, and many people credit director David Slade with the improvement. Cinematical’s Eric D. Snider, for example, described him as “a good fit for the material,” noting his past work on the unsettlingHard Candy and “energetically creepy vampire flick”30 Days of Night. Could Slade work his magic next on an ailing superhero?

We’re talking about the beloved and hairy Wolverine, of course. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the first solo outing with the character, did not fare well with critics, but it made $373 million at the box office worldwide, so a sequel is moving forward. The process of choosing a director has narrowed down to two men, Slade and Robert Schwentke (The Time Traveler’s Wife). New York Magazine’s Vulture blog says that Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, will make the pick, though they report: “A well-placed source inside the production insists: ‘It’s going to be Slade.’”

Between the two, I’d rather see Slade give it a go. Schwentke made Tattoo, a very stylish serial killer thriller, in his native Germany, then made his first Hollywood feature with Jodie Foster, Flightplan, following that up with the soapy The Time Traveler’s Wife. Maybe the upcoming Red will change my mind, but so far all I’ve seen out of Schwentke is good-looking, anonymous films.

That’s all that director Gavin Hood could produce with the first film; the next one needs more of a harder edge, and Slade might be able to accomplish that, even working within the PG-13 ratings limitation. Wolverine is too good a character to let drown in increasingly mediocre product. Wolverine 2 (or whatever it’s eventually called) will start off in Japan as our hairy hero learns martial arts and falls in love with a good woman.

10 fun things to know about ‘Eclipse’

Via The Arizona Central

LOS ANGELES – The third installment in the girl-meets-vampire narrative, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” hits theaters at 12:01 a.m. on June 30, 2010. Here are 10 tidbits about the film from the cast, director and screenwriter.

1. It doesn’t take Robert Pattinson long to get into character. All he has to do to become Edward is slip in the contact lenses that give him vampire eyes.

“They make me miserable as soon as I put them in. That’s what creates the pouting and brooding character,” Pattinson says.

2. “Eclipse” features the long-awaited first kiss between werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and Bella (Kristen Stewart).

Lautner says, “Bella is a fantastic kisser.”

3. There’s more action in “Eclipse” than the previous two movies combined, but it didn’t mean extra work for Stewart.

“The action was absolutely everyone else’s responsibility. I just stand behind people who are stronger than me the entire time. I didn’t even get to run around as much as I did in the second movie,” Stewart says.

4. Director David Slade met with each actor before filming to get their views on their characters. He used other meetings to add his own ideas.

5. If you look closely, you’ll see Bella’s bedroom is different from the previous two movies. It’s 4 feet wider because Slade needed extra room for the lenses he was used to shoot the movie.

6. Weather in Vancouver, Canada, where the film was shot, again created problems.

“Sunlight was the big problem,” Slade says. “It would have been perfect for any other movie but not for us.”

7. “Twilight” writer Stephenie Meyer was on the set during filming, but not to deal with the script. She was there in case the director or actors had a question about a character.

“She has a backstory for all the characters,” “Eclipse” screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg says.

8. Although it might not look like it, the actors who play vampires spent four hours every morning in the makeup chair. They had to be sprayed completely to create the pale, shimmering skin.

9. Hours before Dakota Fanning showed up to chat with the press about her role as Jane, the 16-year-old actress took her ACT exams. She has no work planned past the “Twilight” movies, so she’s going to college.

Fanning has narrowed the list of schools but says she has made no final decision.

10. Pattinson had a difficult time doing fight scenes with Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays the evil Victoria. That’s because he found her to be such a gentle person.

“She was afraid she would be hurting me,” Pattinson says.

Howard says she was afraid if she messed up Pattinson hair, millions of “Twilight” fans would hate her.
